Copyright Removal Notices to Affect Google Rankings

Copyright Removal Notices to Affect Google Rankings

Google announced yet another change to its search algorithm which is supposed to take effect next week (yes, another change, again!). The change/update is basically now when Google receives, or has received, a notice of copyright infringement on a website from the apparent copyright owner, Google will not only flag it in the search results as it has always done, but will actually lower the ranking of the website in their search engine or remove it completely from the search results.

Now this sounds like a good thing, right? Websites that have ripped off other people’s content should be penalized, I agree. HOWEVER, Google does not have the authority to make that decision, and while it is being disputed, the site in question should not have to suffer in terms of search engine rankings. I can think of many people who would abuse this new rule, just to hurt their online competition to get them bumped down in Google’s search engine rankings.

Google’s Amit Singhal,  SVP, Engineering, says “Only copyright holders know if something is authorized, and only courts can decide if a copyright has been infringed; Google cannot determine whether a particular webpage does or does not violate copyright law,” . “So while this new signal will influence the ranking of some search results, we won’t be removing any pages from search results unless we receive a valid copyright removal notice from the rights owner.”*

While this sounds re-assuring, and the fact that Google says it will be providing tools to website owners to use when they feel their website has been wrongfully removed from the Google search results, there may be some short term, or even long term, negative results for many websites on Google.

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free.
