Google update: Improved diversity of domains in searches

Matt Cutts recently tweeted about a new algorithm update to Google that will apparently improve the diversity of of domains returned in Google searches. What does this mean for your website and rankings?

If you use Google often, you’ve probably noticed that for many searches, you’ll get the same domain in the results a couple of times. Sometimes the same domain can show a couple of times within the first two or three pages of the Google search results and sometimes you’ll see major directories dominate the results pages with their listings. This can be a bit annoying, especially when you’re looking for a range of results from different websites.

However, this may be a good thing for Search Engine Optimization strategists, as it potentially leaves more room to rank other websites in the top pages, by limiting the number of results of a particular domain.

When we did a quick test to see how the new Google algorithm change has improved the diversity of search results in terms of different domain names returned, and unfortunately did not notice anything much different than what we’ve seen in the past. For example, for the travel industry, we’re still seeing many results from trip advisor dominating the first page on Google.

According to the tweet by Matt Cutts, it’s ‘a small algo change’ so it may not be very noticeable as yet for many types of searches – as yet.

Did you notice the effects of this Google algorithm change? If so, please drop us a line in the comments section.

There are some interesting points in that clause but I don’t know if I see all of them eye to eye .There is some validity but I will hold off on opinion until I look into it further. Good work, thanks and we want more! Added to FeedBurner.
