Search Engine Optimization

Google announced yet another change to its search algorithm which is supposed to take effect next week (yes, another change, again!). The change/update is basically now when Google receives, or has received, a notice of copyright infringement on a website from the apparent copyright owner, Google will not only flag it in the search results as it has always done, but will actually lower the ranking of the website in their search engine or remove it completely from the search results.

Google recently released a new feature for mobile browsers, which let’s you write on the screen to search for something, instead of typing! if you use a smartphone to search Google, you’ll understand the frustrations of sometimes mistyping your search query and having to backspace to delete and type again. So basically what happens is when you launch Google in your mobile browser, and have the new handwriting feature active, the virtual keyboard won’t pop up like before; you simply begin typing anywhere on the screen and Google will (try) to interpret your scribbles and enter it into the search field for you.

Search Engine Optimization requires a couple of things to be successful: an understanding of how search engines work, how to direct and guide them through your site, and how to optimize your page content (there is more of course, I’m sticking to the core basics here). Guiding a search engine ‘bot’ through your pages requires the use of meta tags, which are simply HTML tags used in your page headers that tell the search engine bot different things about your page.

As an online marketing expert, I’m perpetually exploring marketing trends and various aspects of the industry in order to best understand the current business environment. This includes figuring out how individual bloggers are best making money, especially through content monetization.

But what’s surprised me the most is that even though there is a lot of discussion about monetizing online content, there really isn’t a single centralized location with all the information. That’s why I’m sharing what I think are four great ways to monetize your blog’s content.

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is one of the most popular and competitive web based services available. As business becomes more competitive, so does web based marketing (i.e. making sure your website shows up in search engines and outranks your competiton).

What exactly is search engine optimization? Don’t websites automatically get ranked on google? these are some of the questions i get asked on a daily basis. Search engine optimization is a service- it is not generally included in normal web development as it requires time, attention to detail, extensive research and an excellent understanding of search engines and how they work. Websites usually do find their way into Google’s index, but if the site is not properly optimized, it will probably show up on page 99,999… which is pointless.

Submitting your website to search engines is just as important as (organic) search engine optimization itself. Most people think that by sticking a few meta tags in your website’s header, you will get your website ranked highly on Google. But if you think about it… how are the search engines supposed to know your website is online? If you’re relying on Google to stumble upon your website eventually, chances are it probably will, but are you willing to wait?

WordPress blogs have become extremely popular as cost effective website solutions. I started receiving more inquiries this year about setting up WordPress to use as a blog platform to complement a current website, as well as using WordPress as the website itself. However, many people still do not know the real power of using WordPress, whether it be for a blog or a website, so in this article I will explain a bit of what WordPress is and how it can save you a lot of money in website development costs, as well as helping your website rank on the major search engines.

Social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn have been popular for a long time, but have recently become extremely popular as more people are beginning to understand the power of the internet. Most of us have been using these social media websites to keep in touch with friends and family, build new relationships and partnerships and generally grow our ‘networks’, but the focus seems to have changed from keeping in touch, to building awareness of your business and dominating the search engines (isn’t it funny how most things regarding websites boil down to search engine rankings?).

Optimizing your website for search engines is crucial nowadays to get found on the search engines. We all know the higher you rank, the better exposure you get, which could mean potentially more business. So you go out and hire a company to optimize your website, and slowly find (if they did it properly) that your website now begins to show on the first page or second page of Google for your main keyword. “Excellent!” you say proudly. Since you’re now ranking on the first or second page of Google, business will begin pouring in and you’ll soon be a multi-millionaire, right?
